Unpack Repack // ‘When you get what you want, bu Unpack Repack // ‘When you get what you want, but not what you need’

Stumbling around my home in a fuzzy state I depend on an automation gained over hundreds of similar experiences. I open my expedition duffels and systematically sort the washing, exped kit and electronics into various piles. Some to be repacked and some to be put back in storage until they are required again. The washing machine whirrs into action.

Sometimes, I feel like i’m in a dark tunnel. Unable to see even a pin prick of light. My mind and body shrouded in a seemingly dense, all consuming fog. Yet, I have come to learn and trust that there is a light at the end of the proverbial tunnel that is bright and full of promise. It is a feeling that I have become accustomed to over the years. The flux of pre and post expedition life. Eventually, this veil of fog lifts and the mind regains it’s focus. The equilibrium restores and the body reboots.

Over the years, I suppose that I have at times, struggled to accept and acknowledge and work out how best to navigate my way out of this self imprisonment. Yet, as I get older and begin to understand myself and my world more, I am becoming ever more adept at living not in the past, nor the future but the present moment. I have grown a little weary of this perpetual state of change. It is something that I have spoken openly about in the past – a life in surround sound. The feeling of standing in the midst of a storm, watching the debris fly around me. The post expedition come downs.

With this learning, I am also becoming ever better at the subtle art of saying, ‘no’. As much as I would love to do anything, I realise that I can’t do ‘everything,’ and sometimes, sacrifices need to be made for the greater good. Again, this is a liberating feeling and a hard fought realisation in so many multifarious ways. Consequently, it has allowed me to focus on things which I hope will help shape my life in new ways – for the better.

Kilimanjaro // Stars, Sunsets & Magic I don’t k Kilimanjaro // Stars, Sunsets & Magic

I don’t know how it does it but Kilimanjaro has done it once again. Even after 37 summits it still feels incredibly special standing on the roof of Africa with a team.

The last 48 hours has included watching the sun rise from 5600m, tears on the summit, 4000m of descent, extending our thanks to our incredible local crew, a big celebration meal, certificates and dancing until our legs couldn’t take anymore in the legendary Moshi night clubs until 4am! Mix this all up, add in the previous 5 days on the mountain and all that goes with it, and it goes some way in providing the magic.

I find it hard to pinpoint exactly what it is, or to explain in words why climbing Kili is so good, it just is. It always is.

Winter Games // Chamonix For the past few weeks I Winter Games // Chamonix

For the past few weeks I’ve had the pleasure of being in an around the Chamonix Valley.

Whilst my main objective was to ski as much as possible conditions have not always been ideal for this. However this meant I’ve been to a few new sunny sport crags near to Martigny, forced to go high to find some alpine ice, and enjoyed some resort skiing along the way.

Few sports offer the freedom skiing does, especially when you turn your back to the piste and tour off into the distance.

Learning // Snoworks Ski School (Tignes) They say Learning // Snoworks Ski School (Tignes)

They say that ‘Learning’ is the process of acquiring new understanding, knowledge, behaviours, skills, values, attitudes, and preferences.

It’s a process that leads to change, which occurs as a result of experience and increases the potential for improved performance and future learning.

Wow, what a cool week learning about how to ski and how skiing works. The depth of knowledge on offer, the detail and subtleties have been perfectly pitched.

I’ve tried hard to open my mind to absorb as much of this new ski language as possible. To let it flow in and out through my legs. Hopefully I’ve improved this week, even if just a little.

-

This year I have consciously pulled back from a relentless high altitude schedule which has granted me some disposable time. Time I have filled with as much practical learning as I can afford and my mind can handle. I’ve learnt to paraglide and now take to the sky at any given opportunity, the process of red pointing harder sport climbs and, as above, the intricacies of skiing and how skiing works.

Learning a new skill or improving on one is a remarkably rewarding process albeit frustrating at times. Maybe it’s just one of the delights of getting older…I’m hungry to learn.
